Kinda torn between subbing Warrior or Monk. will probably try both until level 30. Main job will be thief.
After 30 i'll prolly sub an advance like samurai, ninja oer dark night. Not sure here either.
My current plan is to go Ranger with Warrior sub at 30. If there is no one interested in playing a needed group piece (like bard, or whatever), I'll do that instead.
I realize we don't HAVE to have everyone playing certain jobs. It just seems to me the game is a lot more fun when you can form a good group and advance on to see new areas.

Most likely going Dragoon, but also mulling over the idea of a Beast Tamer.

Probably going for Samurai as main job. Thinking of doing Warrior as sub job.

Can a Black Mage be a White Mage as sub job?

any job can have any subjob. no limits there. Question is weather good for you or not. Black mage / white mage subjob would be pretty good. While maybe blackmage / thief wouldn't be so hot.
Casters better off subbing casters and melee subbing other melee.

If I were to switch jobs to WHM, would I still be able to use my BLM abilities, and vice versa, or do you lose the skills from the non-current job? The manual doesn't mention this, as far as I can see.
Mahl,
Once you qualify (level 30?) to take on a sub job - no - you'd still have BLM spells BUT - they'd be like half of what they'd be if BLM was your "main" job - as far as I know. May want to consider BLM/WHM rather than WHM/BLM
If you are like me - and switched jobs early (from whm to rdm) - then yes you lose your WHM spells (that are not crossover spells with rdm). I did that at level 5 for my whm cos I could see soloing a whm was gonna suck badly - thank God I did though as rdm is much much better as a "main" class.

BLM would still be my main job, but I would switch to WHM for a time to gain some healing spells, then switch back to BLM. Will that work?

yeah Mahl.
Can switch around freely. Your subjob can be a maximun of half your main level. You will have to level the sub separatly tho i.e take it as a main job for for awhile.

I'm afraid I haven't been very clear about what I'm asking. I'll try again.
If I switch to WHM as my main job for a while, then switch back to BLM. Will I be able to cast the WHM healing spells while I have BLM as my main job?
For example, I saw a player who was an L10 BLM/ L7 WHM. He switched main jobs from BLM to WHM to gain healing spells, but when he switched back to BLM was he still able to use his WHM spells?

Yes, the skills of the subclass will carry over too your primary.
So a level 30 blm/15 whm would have the spells of the blm and whm.
Skills carry over as well.

Yeah. Found out that you have to be L18 and complete a quest in order to be able to select a subjob, which is what I need in order to use the spells and abilities of both classes. Can't level the subclass (unless you switch to it as main for a time) so I went ahead and got a couple of levels of WHM now. When nobody is around or if I don't want to get too far ahead of the other newbie peeps (so we can group), I'll continue to level the WHM.
