Pretty un-classy way to end your soccer career.
Impressive hit, though.

I'd have liked it if France won the World Cup if it was just for Zinedine Zidane as it was going to be the last match of his carreer but after that crap he pulled I was all for Italy. I'm still curious what was said however, which pissed him off so much to do something that stupid.

What most people didn't see was Mazeratti pinching Zidane's nipple and sorta humping him from behind. Not to mention Mazeratti is a known asshole and Zidane is not a frenchman by ancestry. My guess is he fucked with him a little then said some racist crap.
Zidane acted out of line, but I'm sure he knew the consequences. Italy would have been smashed had Zidane stayed in to play.
That coupled with the fact that no referees were believed to have actually seen the incident firsthand, rather pulled the card after seeing it replayed on the big screen (which is a huge no-no)

There's a good (and slightly sarcastic) news post on this site.
Zidane is still one of the best players of his time anyway =p Mazeratti probably didn't fake that, seeing how Zidane could head a ball pretty damn hard and far as it is.

As far as I know it was never shown on the big screen so most of the audience had no clue why Zidane received the red card. But there's a little screen the 4th referee can see and people claim he informed the rest of the referees based on that, which is a no-no in football, yeah.

Not sure, on the U.S. broadcast the announcers were saying that the play was shown on the jumbotron which the main ref caught a glimpse of when discussing it with the line ref.
But that could be wrong, too.

The Guardian reports that Mazeratti called Zidane a Terrorist wich led to the incident, dunno if it's true though :p

France played well in this tournament except in the game against Portugal. They played dirty and were outclassed, winning unfairly. Luckily, there is justice in this world and their bullshit was given back to them in full by dirtier than them, the legendary Italians. From Cannavaro accidentally putting Henry K.O. to Mazeratti making a fool out of the otherwise excellent Zidane, the Italians and their antics, along with their scoring power, got the best of the French and their lame simulated fouls (the only way they could score in their last two games).
I'm happy I'll be spared the arrogant French discourse had they won. There is too many French and French-wannabe (Quebecers) around these parts...

While probably true, all of that is a valid tactic to try and get someone to do something stupid. Granted, it's not the best sportsmanship, but sportsmanship is for wussy girls. I used to do similar things when I played soccer and actually baited 2 players into throwing punches at me (I wouldn't use racist material, but anything else was fair game), and countless others into doing something extremely stupid so I could dominate them.

You dominated people.... in soccer?
Err. No.
(say that like the line from Happy Gilmore about the guy eating dog shit for breakfast and its funny)

Soccer is one of the most physically intense sports that you can play.
It would make most football (american pigskin) and basketball players cry in their fruit loops.
... with all due respect, domination is very possible in soccer.

Actually we had the football players watch us in high school one time when we were running a practice with a good bit of physical training. By the end, their jaws were visibly slack and when the practice was over they actually gave us a standing ovation.
